Defender Willy Boly has also joined, completing a season-long loan deal. Both transfers were announced on Saturday morning, with the Neves signing unveiled with him wearing the team's new black away kit.

Neves has penned a five-year contract believed to be worth £40,000 a week. The £15m fee equals the Championship record set a year ago when Villa signed Jonathan Kodjia.

"I’m very excited to play at this club," Neves said.

"It is a very big club and I hope to help the team to win their goals. I have always wanted to play in England and we have a good team.

"I think we can do good things this season. It is a good opportunity for me to work again with a trainer I worked with last year.

"I am very excited to start and to play in front of the fans – I love that."

This is the third time since last August that Wolves have broken their transfer record, after the captures of fellow Portuguese players Ivan Cavaleiro for £7m and Helder Costa for £13m, both from Benfica.

As with those deals agent Jorge Mendes has brokered the moves on behalf of Fosun.
