Paul Lambert: 'I could have got Wolves up there'

Former Wolves boss Paul Lambert says he's delighted to see the team top of the Championship – and believes he could have guided them there too.

The Scot was sacked in the summer after just seven months in charge, with Wolves hiring Nuno Espirito Santo as his replacement.

He regularly spoke of the club needing a shake-up towards the end of his tenure – and thinks if he'd have got the opportunity to overhaul Wolves he would have been a success.

"I've no animosity towards Wolves whatsoever - it's a great club with a great fanbase," Lambert told the Express & Star.

"I really enjoyed my time there and we had some really good moments.

"There were ups and down and I always say the Championship is about consistency. Then we had a great cup run as well.

"I've got no doubt I could have them up there too and that's not being big headed or anything, I've done it with Norwich and I know what it takes.

"Wolves are doing great and hopefully they do go up - it's a great club with good people like Kev (Thelwell) and Laurie (Dalrymple)."

Lambert has turned down a couple of offers in club management and is biding his time for the right one to come around.

The Scot - who wasn't surprised by his Wolves departure owing to the big changes happening at the club at the time - only had one transfer window as Wolves boss and believes if he'd had the opportunity to spend big this summer he could have been a success.

"If that (spending) had happened I'm sure I'd have them there because the foundations were in place," he added.

"It needed a shake up. The fanbase is fabulous and I was fortunate to see that place full, it was special.

"I've no ill feeling at all towards that club."
