Former Wolves boss Paul Lambert has been announced as the new manager of Stoke City.

Lambert replaces Mark Hughes at the Bet365 Stadium and has been tasked with keeping the Potters in the Premier League.

The ex-Villa boss has been out of football since being sacked by Wolves at the end of last season, who instead turned to Nuno Espirito Santo as the man to lead them to the Premier League.

His appointment in the Potteries comes as something as a surprise as he had not been among the main names in the frame and has not managed in the Premier League since leaving Villa in 2015.

He has since had two Championship jobs at Blackburn and Wolves.

Stoke turned to Lambert after another ex-Villa manager, Martin O'Neill, turned down the chance to take over the struggling outfit

The relegation-threatened side face Manchester United at Old Trafford tonight.

Lambert's short-lived spell at Molineux proved mixed, with a memorable FA Cup run, which featured a win at Stoke, as well as away to Liverpool, sandwiched between an underwhelming run of results in the league.
