Edwards, 32, spent nine years at Wolves before joining league rivals Reading early this season.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are six points clear at the top, but three games without a win.

When asked on The 72 on Talksport 2 if Wolves could be pipped to the post, Edwards said: “It is is six points but, on a personal level, I just think Wolves are too good.

“I said, maybe three or four games into the season, they could be on for a record-breaking season.

“You look at the quality they’ve got, I was lucky to enough to work there in pre-season and see what the manager is all about.

“He is top drawer and then you implement all the players in his arsenal as well, it is going to be a really successful team – not just this season.

“I think they’ll go on to the Premier League and go again. I don’t think they’ll be cannon fodder for the big boys.

“We saw their performances against Manchester City and Southampton – with their second string, at times, in those cup games.”

Edwards was part of the Wolves side which won promotion to the top flight in the 2008/09 campaign.

He was also in the League One-winning team in 2013/14.

The Welsh midfielder, who will line up against Wolves for the struggling Royals on Saturday, added: “It is all but over.

“They’ve got too much strength in depth and when that club gets going, it’s hard to stop. We were lucky to have that in 08/09.

“Once the fans sense that success and sense it’s close, they drive you forward.”

Also sharing his views on The 72 was former Molineux hotshot Chris Iwelumo.

He was also in the 08/09 Championship-winning side, managed by Mick McCarthy.

The Scot spent two years with Wolves and, like his old team-mate Edwards, is confident Nuno’s charges will see the job through despite their recent results.

“It is two draws and a loss,” said Iwelumo.

“That is the wheels coming off? This is Wolves’ little sticky patch and every team will go through it in the Championship.

“They’ve got a cushion there. They can afford to drop points.

“The players believe in exactly what the manager is putting to them – and they are putting it into action.”
