Kevin Thelwell: Wolves ready for late transfer fight
Wolves can handle a late splurge in the transfer market this summer, sporting director Kevin Thelwell has stated, as he warned of a potentially ‘difficult’ summer ahead.
With just a few short weeks between the World Cup and the end of the transfer window – which closes when the Premier League season starts – it’s possible Wolves may not do much business until the final part of the summer.
And Thelwell told the Express & Star: “It definitely feels like it’s going to be more difficult because players are waiting to see how they do in the World Cup and what the situation is after that.
“The end of the window comes pretty quickly after the World Cup finishes, which makes it tough in terms of the timeframe.
“All the windows are difficult, in England we do it a bit differently to everybody else.
“The Germans are the sensible ones, they get their business done early, whereas us guys wait for the last 7-10 days to try and get the best deal.
“All the planning and preparation you do sort of goes out the window a bit when you get into the last throes of the transfer window.
“We all know the parameters and we’re prepared for it. We’ve proved we’re capable of handling the situation so let’s hope that’s the case this year.”
Wolves have relied heavily on super agent Jorge Mendes for players in the past two years.
Thelwell hopes the link-up with Mendes – and other agents – will make for another successful window.
“We’ve been clear about where we were with Jorge and others agents – it’s not just Jorge,” he added.
“If we’ve got access to a network or can communicate with people we probably haven’t been able to communicate with before, then of course we’ll try and use that situation to our advantage.
“It’s no different to what other clubs are doing with agents all over the world, trying to build relationships to allow them to get access to certain players and make the best of it for your club.
“The situation’s worked great for us but I don’t think it’s the main part of what we do.
“Let’s hope we can be as successful as we have been in the past two windows.”
