The 24-year-old stabbed home on the stroke of half-time as Portugal beat Scotland 3-1 at Hampden Park on Sunday night.

He followed in the footsteps of Wolves hero Steve Bull, who netted on his England bow in the same stadium in May 1989 as the Three Lions won 2-0 in the Rous Cup.

"It was a dream debut. To score a goal and win the match, which is of course the most important thing," said Costa

"I am delighted with the goal and the match."

Costa is now determined to chip in with goals on a regular basis for Wolves.

He is yet open his Premier League account, although he did score in the Carabao Cup triumph at Sheffield Wednesday.

"I am very happy at Wolves, and also now with the national team," said Costa.

"If we work well at our clubs we are closer to our national team."

Centre forward Eder – also on the scoresheet for Portugal – was delighted to see Costa get off the mark at the first attempt.

“It’s very good because he is a young talent and he has been improving a lot, and we need players like him and I am very happy for him," he added.
