Wolves' last England international Matt Jarvis backs duo for call-up
Former Wolves winger Matt Jarvis believes it is merely a matter of time until skipper Conor Coady or Ryan Bennett earn an England call-up.
Jarvis, now at Walsall, is the last Wolves player to have played for the Three Lions – making his solitary international appearance in 2011.
Coady is rumoured to be the one in line to take Jarvis’s record away from him, but the 32-year-old thinks Bennett should be in with a shout too.
When asked if either of them could end his streak, Jarvis joked: “In the nicest possible way, I hope not.
“But, no, they’re playing extremely well, and I do hope they do.
“To be English and playing in the Premier League every week is no mean feat.”
Bennett has been the surprise star of Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves reign, but Jarvis – having played with him at Norwich – has not been at all surprised by his success.
“I’m absolutely delighted for Ryan,” he said.
“He signed at Wolves and then the manager (Paul Lambert) who signed him was leaving, so he was not really knowing what was going to happen.
“But he has played every week and played fantastic, getting promoted and then in the Premier League week in, week out.
“He deserves everything as he works extremely hard.
“He moans about everything, but he’s very good at everything.”
Jarvis played for England at Wembley, coming on as a 70th-minute substitute in a 1-1 draw with Ghana.
On the pride playing for your country brings, Jarvis added: “It’s fantastic.
“I don’t look back as much as I’m still playing and still trying to go on to the next thing, but it was an amazing experience, for me and the fans, I suppose.
“For them to be there... there were so many fans who came up to me and said ‘I was there at Wembley when you made your debut’. It was amazing, incredible.”
