After Nuno Espirito Santo’s emotional departure on Sunday, as Wolves fell to defeat against Manchester United, the hunt is on for the club’s next manager.

With the Premier League season now over and the European Championships starting on June 11, it is understood there is no immediate rush among the Wolves hierarchy to appoint the new boss.

Instead, it is believed a manager will be brought in within two to three weeks to give them enough time to work with the squad and recruitment plan before next season. In turn, this also gives Wolves time to assess all of the candidates in the frame.

Lage has been installed as the early favourite to take over, with reports suggesting talks are open.

The 45-year-old previously spent time as assistant to Carlos Carvalhal at both Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea and recently spent a year-and-a-half as Benfica boss, before leaving last June.

Paulo Fonseca has also been named as a potential candidate. The Roma boss will vacate the role and be replaced by Jose Mourinho for the start of next season.

Rafa Benitez, Vitor Pereira and Sergio Conceicao also appear among the bookmakers. Whoever does take over will have time to watch forward Adama Traore in action after he was selected in Spain’s squad for this summer’s European Championships. The 25-year-old has five caps to his name after making his international debut in October last year.

Wolves captain Conor Coady will be hoping to join him as he waits on the England squad to be announced today. He is seen as an important leader among the group but it remains to be seen if Gareth Southgate will include him.
