Today marks two months since Wolves completed their previous Premier League campaign and there are barely two weeks before they begin a new one.

The mood among supporters, it is fair to say, has improved little since the 5-0 defeat at Arsenal ended a rather forgettable 2022-23 season. After the past few days, it has arguably gotten worse.

Albion were supposed to be the club enduring the unhappiest summer but while the situation at The Hawthorns remains intensely worrying, events are playing out pretty much as everyone expected.

We know precisely why finances are tight and the Baggies must sell before they can buy (or, to be more precise, sign or loan). It’s a long way from ideal but it is understandable.

Yet with Wolves, increasingly, there’s a nagging sense a piece is missing from the picture.

Yes, we knew things were going to be tricky, with the club needing to curb spending to avoid breaching the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play rules. But the main takeaway from Julen Lopetegui’s interview this week with Spanish journalist Guillem Balague is things have gotten trickier than anyone anticipated, head coach and recruitment team included.
