It doesn’t mean you’d have to like it. A tie against lower league opposition offers Emery’s team a strong chance of progression in a competition which offers another chance to end the club’s wait for a major trophy now in a 28th year.

Yet with Villa second in the Premier League and through to the last-16 to the Europa Conference League, this is a season where the Cup genuinely, for now, sits third on their list of priorities.

Neither would you expect it to be the full focus of Carlos Corberan, albeit the onus is on Albion to avoid embarrassment against non-league Aldershot.
