Shropshire golfers Ashley Chesters and Will Jones were today battling to make the cut at the English Amateur Strokeplay Championships.

Hawkstone's Park's Ashley Chesters was down in 74th position after the first day of the Brabazon Trophy at Walton Heath while Oswestry's Jones was 115th.

The top 60 and ties at the end of today's second round progress to the weekend.

Chesters endudred a poor start to his opening round, double bogeying the first hole.

He steadied the ship but bogeys at the last two holes saw the England international have to settle for a four-over-par 76.

A nightmare opening also proved costly for Jones who was eight-over-par through the first nine holes.

The recent winner of the Clwyd Open in Wales, however, went some way to salvaging his score with a one-under-par back nine for a seven-over-total.

On a tough day, just seven players bettered par with Ireland's Kevin Phelan leading the way on four-under.
