Shropshire golf ace Alex Peters has defeated a 115-strong field to win the English Women's Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

Peters, from Shifnal, triumphed at Little Aston Golf Club in Staffordshire to take the title after three days of competition.

The 18-year old, who plays at Shifnal Golf Club, came from three behind at the half way stage to overtake the leader, Charlotte Thompson of Essex, and finish on three-under par.

The delighted winner admitted her latest win, which takes her one step closer to her ultimate ambition of becoming a professional golfer, is the biggest victory of her career so far.

"It is the first time I have entered the competition so I am happy to have won," she said.

"It is a big tournament and because it is open it attracts players from other countries, including Belgium, Wales and Scotland so the standard is very high.

"I really wanted to do well because I have been playing strongly all year. It was nerve-racking going into the third round because I was behind the leader but when I was ahead I felt a bit more comfortable."

Peters' latest achievement comes after she finished 13th in the British Open Amateurs and fifth in the English Mid Amateurs earlier this year.

Peters' efforts also won her the English Under-23 and Under-21 titles which were also contested during the tournament.

Peters, who has been coached by Jason Brant of East Berkshire Golf Club as well as her father Peter, will now aim to follow up her success by winning the British Ladies Amateur Championship at Shandon Park Golf Club in Ireland on August 21.

And she will also attempt to qualify for the British Professional Open when she takes part in the first of two qualifiers starting later this month.
