Will Jones was today chasing his first victory in golf's prestigious Home Internationals in Scotland.

The Shropshire & Herefordshire first-team regular was defeated in his opening singles match representing Wales at Glasgow Gailes.

After sitting out the morning foursomes, the Oswestry ace was beaten 4&3 by England's Garrick Porteous as Wales suffered an overall 9.5-5.5 defeat.

Ireland beat Scotland 8-7 in the other match, which had to be completed this morning after heavy rain suspended play late yesterday.

Shropshire's interest in the British Boys' Championships in Nottingham is over after Tom Young failed to reach the matchplay stages.

The Hawkstone Park youngster could only manage a round of 79 at Coxmoor yesterday and, after carding the same score at Hollinwell 24 hours earlier, his 14-over-par total left him down in a tie of 160th in a field of 252.

Only the top 64 progressed to the matchplay stages.

But there was better news for James Busby, who plays out of The Shropshire.

He mixed six birdies with two bogeys for an opening 68 in the latest Challenge Tour event – the ECCO Tour Championship in Denmark– to lie in third place and just two shots off the lead.
