Bridgnorth junior golfers celebrate tournament victory
A Shropshire golf club is celebrating becoming the cream of the English crop – after victory in a prestigious national junior competition.
The three-strong team of Callum Brown, Conor White and Jack Butler produced a sensational display to give Bridgnorth a famous success in the Junior Champion Club tournament at Woodhall Spa.
They fought off competition from more than 30 clubs from across England to claim a thrilling triumph, enduring a nervous five-hour wait before being confirmed winners on countback from Suffolk champions Fynn Valley.
The competition is open to clubs have won their respective county team championships, with Bridgnorth becoming the first ever winners from Shropshire & Herefordshire.
"It's was an awesome weekend and it hasn't really sunk in yet," said Bridgnorth junior organiser Stuart Butler.
"We went to enjoy the experience and try and do our club and county proud. We were one of the first teams to finish in the final round and when the lads came in, I thought we had a chance of a top 10.
"Everyone was on a massive high when we found out the result."
Bridgnorth ended with a score of 155 in a tournament where the best two stableford scores from the three players counted on each day. The Shropshire side trailed Fynn Valley by six shots after the first day but produced a fine performance in the second round to claim victory courtesy of a better score on the final day.
Five handicapper Callum led the way, the 15-year-old returning two scores of 40 points.
Conor, who is 13 and plays off seven, also broke his handicap on both days with 38 and 37 while junior captain Jack Butler – who is 18 and has a handicap of 11 – signed for scores of 37 and 31.
Toby Brown, Owen Betteridge, Dan Taylor and Tom Russell joined the three players selected for Woodhall Spa in winning the Shropshire final.
