Shropshire's Alexandra Peters was today hoping to continue her fairytale debut alongside the stars of ladies golf.

Shifnal's Peters was due to begin the second round of the British Women's Open at Hoylake in Liverpool this afternoon on one-over-par after a stunning performance on her Major championship debut yesterday.

That left her just three shots off the overnight lead, jointly shared by South Korean duo Haeji Kang and So Yeon Ryu, in one of the biggest tournaments in the sport.

Peters – one of only 10 amateurs in the star-studded field – briefly held a share of the lead after nine holes and is on course to make the halfway cut at the end of today's round, which fell on her 19th birthday.

Peters recently claimed the biggest success of her career, winning the English Amateur Women's Strokeplay Championship.

Meanwhile, Shropshire former Ryder Cup star Peter Baker today played himself into contention for a Challenge Tour victory.

The ex-Lilleshall Hall ace was three-under-par for his second round after an opening 69 yesterday at the Kazakhstan Open. That left him on six-under for the tournament and just five shots off the lead.

James Busby, who plays out of The Shropshire Golf Centre in Muxton, was amongst the late starters after a five-under-par 67 yesterday.
