S&H golfers motivated to succeed in memory of Andrew Porter
The memory of Andrew Porter will live on when Shropshire & Herefordshire’s second team launch their Midland League campaign on Sunday.
Shrewsbury’s Nick Evans will lead the team for the first time in the home match with Nottinghamshire at Kington in a match which is sure to be tinged with sadness.
Porter was due to begin his second and final year as second-team captain but died suddenly at 44 in January.
And Evans is determined to ensure the man he succeeds remains very much at the forefront of the players’ minds throughout this season.
He said: “I was due to be vice-captain to Andrew this year with a view to be taking over as second-team captain at the end of the season.
“With the tragic circumstances around Andrew, I was asked to take over this year which I was more than willing to do.
“But, as far as I’m concerned, Andrew is still the captain this year and I am the vice-captain.
“He was very much a people’s captain who we all loved playing for and we will all be very motivated to do well for him this season.”
After a third-place finish last season, hopes are high for another strong campaign for the second team. Evans has handed a debut to Burghill Valley’s Liam Wiliams tomorrow and is hoping home advantage can prove crucial in the opening clash of the season.
He added: “Kington is a course where you need to be patient.
“Our lads will have played it plenty before and hopefully that will help us on the day.”
