Craig Harris and Gareth Jones fire Quatt forward
The destructive batting of Craig Harris and the all-round bowling talents of Gareth Jones fired Quatt to their second success of the season in the Henshalls Insurance Shropshire Cricket League Premier Division.
Harris played the stand-out innings with a blistering unbeaten 71 on an afternoon where no other batsman passed 21 as Quatt chased down Newtown’s 120 for the loss of six wickets.
Jones had earlier displayed his multi-skills by picking up two wickets during an opening spell of left-arm seam, before returning later to pick up another two victims with his left-arm spin.
“When Craig comes off he can be very destructive and we needed him on Saturday,” said Quatt skipper Craig Jones.
“The wicket was doing a bit and if you bowled in a good place you were rewarded.
“But anything that was pitched up, Craig just whacked it, basically.”
Skipper Jones was pleased to see his side get over the line and delighted to see his namesake Gareth make an impression with the ball.
“Gareth bowled eight overs of seam and picked up two wickets with the new ball and then came back later and picked up a couple more bowling spin,” he said.
“Gareth has always bowled a bit of spin in the nets and it’s something we talked about doing in games.
“We needed another spin option and at the moment things are going well for him and he is really enjoying his cricket.”
Terry Hughes offered support with ball, bagging 3-37 while Terry Cowburn returned figures of 2-28. Hamish Harding and John Anthony both scored 21 for Newtown who battled away for 45.5 overs.
“I thought they were a few runs short, I thought 150-160 was about par,” added skipper Jones.
“This game was a potential banana skin because Newton have got a decent bowling attack and I am sure a few sides will go there and lose.”
Quatt now turn their attentions to Saturday’s clash with table-toppers Whitchurch.
“It will be a tough game but we have got a strong side out and it will be a good test for us” added Jones.
Whitchurch are setting the pace at the top of the Henshalls Shropshire County Cricket League following a dramatic three-run success against Market Drayton.
Vansh Bajaj was the hero of the hour for Whitchurch when he dismissed Sam Evans to end Drayton’s chase on 155.
That was one of five victims for off-spinner Bajaj while seamer Daniel Bowen picked up 4-65 to take his wicket-tally to 15 for the season.
Bowen had ripped through the Drayton top order to reduce them to 56-4 in pursuit of Whitchurch’s 158.
But opener James Coggins (58), Nigel Wellings (20), Kyle Morgan (20) and Damion Morgan (15 not out) edged Drayton towards victory before Bajaj grabbed four of the last five wicket to see his side home.
Whitchurch skipper Alex Huxley had earlier contributed 29 to Whitchurch’s 158 with William Doerr ending 45 not out and Simon Bowen making 30.
Drayton’s Sam Evans continued his fine start to the season with 5-37 and now tops the wicket-taking table with 16 victims.
Worfield climbed up to fourth in the standings after picking up their first victory of the season.
Struggling Albrighton were on the end of an emphatic 10-wicket reverse with seasoned campaigner Calvin Priest leading the way.
Priest picked up five of Albrighton’s top six on his way to impressive figures of 5-37 from 12 overs.
Will Weir and James Parker claimed two wickets each as Albrighton were dismissed for 102. James Bishton and Ismail Anwar were the only home batsmen to reach 20.
Worfield made light work of their chase with openers Tom Whitney and Tom Pickerill ending unbeaten on 42 and 40 respectively.
