For the last couple of months, youngsters have been attending coaching sessions organised through the Shropshire Wildlife Trust-led Meres & Mosses Landscape Partnership Scheme.

The project involved children with very little or no previous experience being given lessons by Level 2 qualified coach Mottram and culminated with 10 youngsters taking part in a competition on the Shropshire Union Canal near Whixall.

All children were successful in catching a number of fish, including two impressive bream for intermediate winner Lewis Mottram.

Edward Astbury was runner-up in the intermediate event while Jay Carey won the junior competition with Reg Astbury second.

The project was run in conjunction with Canal and River Trust and supported by a number of businesses, which provided prizes.

They included Angling Bait Company, Rod & Gun Dawley, Preston Innovations and Go Outdoors, Shrewsbury, which supplied discount waterproof sets to all participants, as well as prize vouchers.
