Shrewsbury have the leaders in their sights

Head coach Simon Evitts insists Shrewsbury are relishing the chance to be the first team this season to beat Midlands 3 West North leaders Burntwood.

Burntwood are two points clear of Telford Hornets at the top of the table after winning all seven of their league games this term.

Evitts is well aware his men face a testing afternoon, but Shrewsbury will head to Staffordshire in good spirits.

The Sundorne Caste men have climbed to seventh spot in the table after winning their last three league games.

Last weekend they convincingly beat divisional rivals Harborne 83-0 to reach the semi-finals of the North Midlands Shield Plate.

Evitts, George Adams and Liam Deery, all influential performers, played no part in that game but are expected to return to the squad for the Burntwood clash.

Evitts said: “Burntwood are flying at the top of the table and are undefeated, but we’re also hitting our straps now and we’re really looking forward to the challenge of going there to see where we’re at.

“We’ve beaten Stafford, who are third in the table, this season, and we’re putting a few results together.”

Hornets – who have the best defensive record in the division – will fancy their chances as they make the trip to Uttoxeter.

Uttoxeter – who have the second-weakest attack – are second from bottom with just one win this campaign.

In Midlands 2 West North, Whitchurch are leading the way after seven wins from seven games.

They host seventh-placed Veseyans while Ludlow head to Leek and and Cleobury Mortimer host Spartans.

Oswestry will be chasing their first home victory of the campaign when they welcome Port Sunlight to Granville Park.

Despite several wins on the road this season, the Eagles have enjoyed scant success at home, and now find themselves eighth in the South Lancs and Cheshire Two.

Their disappointing home run continued when bowing out of the North Mids Shield with a battling 22-18 exit to Veseyans on Saturday despite late tries from James Roberts and Andrew Smith.

They now set their sights on Port Sunlight, who lie third bottom in the table, although the Wirral visitors put 50 points past Oldershaw in their last outing.
