Telford aces finish with a real flourish
Telford Athletic club's senior side saved their best till last as they hit form in their final two outings of the season to stave off relegation.
The team compete in Division Three of the six division Midland League were down in sixth place after trailing home last in the opening two meetings of the season.
But they stormed back in style to claim a victory on home soil in the penultimate event of the season before claiming a second-placed finish in the finale at Coventry.
Those results saw them end in third place overall behind Gloucester and Coventry and having finished strongly, Telford will be keen to mount a challenge for promotion next season.
In the final meeting at Coventry, the host club won with 374 points with Telford following them home with 357, ahead of Gloucester (354), Tipton (315), Worcester (294) and Leamington (223).
Sarah Benson impressed on her debut for Telford as she followed up her victory in the Vic Musgrove 5km race by winning the 300m in 10.41.07.
Telford also bagged maximum points in three events.
Rachel Coupe (4.59.43) and Claire Martin (4.56.14) claimed impressive first places by winning both won their A and B races in the 1500m.
Danielle Langdale (3.40m) and Helen Watson (1.90m) won the A and B string pole vault competitions, repeating their performances in the previous meeting.
Francesca Garrott and Rebecca Scott bagged a double success in the javelin events, throwing 39.58m and 30.00m respectively.
Kimberley Carter added some vital points from the three throwing events she competed in.
She was second in the A string discus (38.55m), fourth in the A hammer (32.14m) and third in the B string shot (8.55m).
England International Jake Watson was the club’s only A string winner in the men’s events as he cleared 4.30m to win the pole vault. He was also fourth in the 400m and high jump and ran a leg in the 400m relay.
Club president John Bradley took second spot in the B string pole vault as he cleared 2.10m.
Jack Brothers gained a personal best of 16.8secs to finish second in the 110m hurdles, while Andrew Martin won the B race in 19.8.
Brothers also claimed another personal best wth a third-placed finish in the triple jump (13.48m) and took third in the long jump.
Shropshire cross country champion Jon Bowie (9.15.3) and Dylan Gillett (9.36.3) added valuable points with second-placed finishes in the 3000m A and B races.
Jamie Carter had two thirds – A string discus and javelin – as well as ending runner-up in the B string shot putt.
Mark Elliott, hammer, and Ali Dummett, shot, gave Telford a clean sweep of third places in the throwing events. Dave Garrott gained two PBs as he won the B string hammer and finished fifth in the discus.
Adam Lloyd shone on his senior debut by winning the javelin B contest.
