Lee Mitchell wants more Vase spirit against Nirvana
Wellington Ams boss Lee Mitchell is hoping to land another upset on an historic day for the club
Ams entertain Leicester Nirvana on Saturday in their first ever appearance in the first round of the FA Vase.
And having caused an shock by dumping RC Warwick out in the qualifying stage, Mitchell and his players are relishing the prospect of tackling a side who play two levels above in the United Counties Premier League.
"It's the first time the club have reached this stage and it would be great to cause another upset.
"We have and then face Wolves Sporting in the JW Hunt Cup next Tuesday. They are two big games and the lads are looking forward to them.
We trained in the week and they were buzzing. They are relishing these two games."
And Mitchell has been handed a boost with the news that star striker Matthew Elsmore is available.
"Matthew Elsmore back tomorrow and that's good news for us," added Mitchell.
"He has only been able to play two games for us this season and he has scored five goals. He is big player for us, he has bags of experience and knows how to finish."
Having suffered relegation last season from the Premier Division, Ams progress this term has been hampered by availability issues.
But Mitchell, who took charge in the summer when his successful Oakengates outfit merged with Ams, is confident their fortunes will improve.
"Consistency is the key for us," he said. "We have probably used 25-30 players already.
"We have had a lot of players unavailable for various reasons – stag-dos, holidays, injuries, etc – but hopefully that is starting to settle down now.
"We haven't been able to put out a settled side yet. We have lost a lot of games by the odd goal and I don't think any of them are better footballing sides, they are just more settled and organised.
"I'm confident that when we start to get a settled side out we will climb the league and, to be honest, I will be disappointed if we don't finish in the top six.
"We had possibly our strongest side out against RC Warwick in the Vase and we played really well.
"And I have got a strong squad to pick from tomorrow so hopefully we can cause another upset."
