Shropshire aces hit the target again
The Shropshire Society side hit the bullseye again to retain their West Midland Archery Society Regional Intercounty Shoot title.
The annual competition, which was held at King Edward V1 School in Handsworth, Birmingham, consists of 15 archers per team with the Shropshire outfit lining up with archers aged 10 up to17.
Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire provided the opposition and after the top eight scorers from each team were totted up, Shropshire were declared the winners.
Team manager Ray Fisher said: “I feel so proud of the team, it’s quite disappointing when I have to leave people out, this is a really good county for archery. We are a good team.”
Incorporated into the same competition was a West Midland Archery Society verses East Midland Archer Society clash. The West Midlands team is picked by a group of five managers and included four Shropshire archers – Penny Healey, Katie Tonkinson, Lauren Rawlings and Katie Mundy-Gill – who helped them to victory,
The West Midland Archery Society was formed in 1964 and have had some great success in bringing through archers who have gone on to the top of the sport.
The most notable is Shropshire’s Alison Williamson, who achieved Great Britain’s first women’s Olympic archery medal for 96 years when she won a bronze medal at Athens 2004.
