Shrewsbury chasing the perfect finale
Shrewsbury aim to put the seal on a perfect season tomorrow when they head to Eccleshall, writes Matt Maher.
Having clinched promotion and been crowned champions, the Sundorne Castle men can end a stunning campaign with a 100 per cent record with victory in Staffordshire.
Despite securing a step up in standard a few weeks ago there has been no let up from Shrewsbury as they go in search of win number 22 which will also see them break the 100-point barrier.
And coach Simon Evitts is sure neither side will lack motivation tomorrow with fifth-placed Eccleshall hoping to succeed where all their league rivals have failed this term and sink the champions.
“It’s not far off being a derby in terms of them being just over the border,” said Evitts, whose side were 43-10 winners against Cleobury Mortimer last weekend.
“The aim for us is to try and complete the perfect season but for them there is the motivation of being the team which stops us from doing that.
“I am sure they will be going all out to try and deny us and home advantage always helps. We are certainly not going to be underestimating them in any way, shape or form.
“We are simply focused on getting the job done. Even now it is hard to comprehend precisely what it would mean, to go through the season winning every league game.
“It’s been a while since the club celebrated a title and to end with a perfect record would be a fantastic achievement and a just reward for all the hard work everyone has put in during the season.”
And Evitts may even play his part in the bid for perfection.
He is back in contention after missing the last few games through injury and admits team selection will prove a headache with a host of players eager to play their part in what will hopefully be a day to remember.
Tomorrow will be the final game for Shrewsbury’s Tipperary-born loose head prop Killian Casey, who is returning to Ireland.
Evitts said: “It’s his final game for us and I am sure he will be aiming for the best possible send-off. He has been excellent all season.”
