They restricted Oswestry to 144-8 in 50 overs on a chilly day at Cricket Meadow.

Warrick Fynn top scored with 40 for the border club, as John-Pierre Erasmus took 3-22 and skipper Whitney took 3-25.

Whitney’s side were struggling when he came to the wicket on 26-4 but his unbeaten 69 from 114 balls saw Bridgnorth to their first win of the season, as he added 26 for the eighth wicket with Tom Weaver (10 not out).

Pace bowler Ben Roberts proved to be the pick of the Oswestry attack with 3-25.

“It was very important to get our first win,” said club spokesman Alex Thomas.

“Sam just got stuck in and Macca (Mark Macpherson-Lees) stuck around for a long time for 17. It was a very big game for us. It’s always a game that they get up for.

“It can always be tense in these low-scoring games – but there was nothing wrong with the deck.

“It was good to get off the mark as we look to carry on from last season’s phenomenal season. We are relying on some of the youngsters we have brought on at the club.”
