Tom Watkins delighted at Telford Tigers double
Head coach Tom Watkins praised his Telford Tigers side for their weekend double over Bracknell Bees.
Having won 2-1 in overtime in Bracknell on Saturday night, Tigers made it two NIHL National Cup wins in as many days with a 4-3 success at Telford Ice Rink on Sunday night.
Joe Miller, Dale White, Adam Taylor and captain Jason Silverthorn all netted.
Watkins said: “I’m pleased with the weekend performances and results.
“I thought we had good balance across the three lines and we were able to just roll them all weekend. On Sunday we moved the puck faster and were able to create some decent chances.
“I’d like us to add some more scoring to kill games but, overall, I’m very pleased and it was nice to be behind the bench instead of playing.”
Tigers 2 returned to winning ways after three straight defeats with a devastating spell in the third period helping them to an 8-6 success at Coventry Blaze.
The game started with Coventry netminder Graham Laverick denying Tigers several times before the home team went in front.
Tigers continued to push forward and were rewarded with a goal from Joshua Hustwick assisted by Matt Price and Ted Thompson.
But Tigers’ hopes of going into the break on level terms were short-lived as Blaze scored again with only 14 seconds remaining in the first period.
The second period was again end but it was the hosts that scored first with a power play goal after Charlie Hammerton received a two-minute penalty for tripping. Blaze scored again very shortly after to make it 4-1, but they were given a two-minute penalty for tripping to give Tigers the power play.
Tigers capitalised on the advantage and Liam Preece scored after a pass from Karol Jets.
The goals kept coming when The Blaze scored again, but Tigers replied with two quick goals from Callum Bowley to make it 5-4 going into the last few minutes of the period.
With only four seconds remaining in the second period, Blaze managed to find the back of the net again for a power play goal to make it 6-4.
The third period saw Tigers come out eager to get back to winning ways and they scored three quick goals within three minutes, two from Charlie Hammerton and one from Joshua Hustwick, all of which were assisted by Callum Griffin. Tigers had 15 minutes to hold on but they continued to put pressure on the Blaze netminder.
Play was end to end and Tigers netminder Ted Thompson made some great saves to keep the Tigers ahead.
But it was Bowley that found the back of the net again in the 59th minute to put the seal on an excellent victory.
