Shrewsbury's Gemma Almond enjoying the Paralympics experience
Shrewsbury's Gemma Almond takes to the pool for the last time today insisting she has loved the Paralympic experience.
Almond failed to make a final at London 2012 for the first time in the 400m freestyle yesterday.
The 19-year-old had competed twice already heading into the 400m freestyle – finishing eighth in the 200m medley almost a week ago before repeating the trick in the 100m butterfly.
She returned to the pool for her third of four events, the 400m freestyle, but could not quite make it three finals from three as she finished 11th overall.
Almond clocked 5:07.43minutes, seven seconds away from the top eight that reached the final, but she maintains it hasn't dampened her spirits as she gets back in the pool today for the 100m freestyle.
"My warm-up went really well, I gave it my all but maybe it wasn't there on the day. It was a tough race but I enjoy it every time," said Almond. "You get into a rhythm and you keep going and for me it wasn't there.
"I still enjoyed the experience and the crowd gets better all the time.
"It is just amazing to be here. I am enjoying it every single time, I know it is getting near the end and it is an amazing experience.
"I have got one more event and I am going to make the most of it. It is the 100m freestyle, which isn't really my event.
"Hopefully I can relax, do my best and enjoy the experience. It would be amazing to make the final and I am going to try really hard." Meanwhile, Sam Scott was on the losing side yesterday as Great Britain's men's sitting volleyball team went down to a quarter-final defeat against Iran.
Newport-based Scott and his team-mates were defeated 3-0 at London's Excel Arena.
Bosnia & Herzagovina, Russia and Germany triumphed in the other quarter-finals. Great Britain will be in action again today when they play fellow losing quarter-finalists Brazil tonight.
