No regrets from Shrewsbury swimmer Gemma Almond
Shrewsbury swimmer Gemma Almond insists she will look back on her Paralympic experience with no regrets and plenty of memories, as Team GB?completed a thrilling Thursday.
Almond finished her four-event schedule yesterday but failed to progress beyond her heat of the 100m freestyle.
And she then watched team-mates David Weir and Jonnie Peacock secured gold medals on the track as Team GB?swept past their medal haul from Beijing four years ago.
Weir then won the T54 800m – his third gold of the Games – before Peacock ran the fastest T44 100m in Paralympic history.
The 19-year-old won in a time of 10.90 seconds as Oscar Pistorius could finish only fourth.
Rower Helena Lucas, cyclist Sarah Storey, swimmer Josef Craig and athlete Hannah Cockroft also took to the top step of the podium on a golden day
Meanwhile, Almond clocked 1:07.40 to finish seventh in her heat, ranking 13th overall with only the top eight progressing.
"It's not my main event but I wanted to soak up the atmosphere for the very last time and I really enjoyed it," said the 19-year-old, who reached the finals of both the 200m medley and 100m butterfly.
"I'm taking a lot of away from these Games, nothing will beat the experience of racing in front of these crowds and I'm delighted to make two finals.
"I'm disappointed I've not lowered my personal best so that's something I will sit down and discuss with my coach."
Next year's World Championships will be staged in Canada and Almond is confident the experience of London will serve her well.
And she is already looking ahead to Rio.
"I need to focus on training and improving. I'm so determined about Rio now and I'm going to try my best in the next four years to get there and to improve my performances and hopefully win a medal.
"I've learned so much from the experience of being here and I think that will serve me well next time I'm at a major championships.
"I'm still young, so to make the team for my home Games and make a couple of finals is a major good achievement for me."
