Jon Woodrow seeks quick response
Telford & Wrekin defender Jon Woodrow has urged his team mates to bounce back from their opening-day defeat in Midlands Premier by inflicting a second straight defeat on Coventry & North Warwickshire this weekend.
The Shropshire side let slip a 1-0 lead at home to Edgbaston after Alex Johnson had opened the scoring in the first half. But they failed to convert further chances and were eventually punished for their wastefulness when Lee De Souza and Ross Quaite turned the result on its head with second-half strikes five minutes apart.
It was a disappointing start to the campaign, Woodrow admitted, but he said the team would face a similar standard of opposition this Saturday and the game offered a good chance to get off the mark.
"We had quite a lot of chances to extend our lead but we didn't take them," said Woodrow.
"We just didn't play as well after the break and let them back into the game.
"In pre-season we had been playing well in friendlies but they got stronger as the game wore on.
"There are still positives to take from the game though. It is a long season and Coventry are a similar sort of side to Edgbaston.
"We have always had close matches with them over the years and I wouldn't expect anything different this weekend.
"But they also lost their opening game (1-0 away at Northampton Saints) so it's a good opportunity to try to win."
Telford will again be without last year's captain Olly Logan, who missed the opening game and will be unavailable until next month, but Woodrow expects to be able to field a largely unchanged side this weekend.
