Alim Khan is Wellington's shot at the title
Alim Khan will stand within a fight of becoming Wellington Boxing Academy's first national champion if he get past the ABA Novice semi-finals.
The 17-year-old Telford College of Arts and Technology student makes the short trip to Great Barr Leisure Centre in Birmingham to compete on Saturday.
The teenage amateur squares up to Londoner Conor Marsden, of Earlsfield ABC, with the two contesting a 51kg contest in Class A, for boxers who have had 10 bouts or under.
Should he go all the way in the tournament, he would take the title with nine unpaid bouts under his belt and trainer Mo Fiaz admits his run has given the whole club a buzz.
He said: "We are all very excited for him. Hopefully, he can past this one and be the first national champion the club has had. It's good for us to be here.
"At the moment, he is boxing really well and is at the top of the game. He's a good, stylish southpaw and he's got a great future in the sport.
"We know of the lad he has got, he likes to mix it but Alim is a strong lad, too. If he wants to trade, he's likely to get a good run for his money.
"I don't think he will have much of a chance of bullying him, it's the early stages of his career but he's developing really well as a fighter.
"When you get to the semi-finals, it's all about nerves but this lad should be more straight forward, as the last lad he fought was a southpaw.
"That was a bit of a clash of styles, but this should suit him more."
Wellington, who opened in 2010, have crowned 10 Midlands champions and had five national semi-finalists so far.
