England Ladies scrum-half Natasha Hunt brought more of the rugby bug to the girls who could form the next female team at Telford Hornets.

The 23-year-old international took the first of two training sessions at Hornets' Hinkshay Road ground last Thursday night with a group of schoolgirls.

The club are coaching them with a view to forming a side that could play their first game as soon as a week on Sunday, after being offered a friendly.

Market Harborough have extended the invitation to travel to Shropshire, with the prospective Hornets line-up likely to be coached by Phil Smith.

The 53-year-old was the 2007 winner of the RFU Midlands Volunteer Award and believes there's potential to build a promising squad at Telford.

He said: "I have got girls here who I think could do something in the Shropshire and Midlands area, so it's good for them to learn from Natasha.

"Our girls are really keen, they organised a couple of discos recently to raise money for the team and for themselves to buy rugby kit.

"There's leagues around for us to enter so, if we can keep it going and the interest is there, that's something for us to look at."

Hunt, who plays her club rugby for Lichfield, was back at Hornets last night, before the club host an RFU 'Pitch Up and Play' day on Sunday, from 1.30pm.

Girls from across the region are invited to come and try their hand at the sport, with Smith hoping they can provide further resources for their set-up.

He said: "We have had a thriving ladies section in the past but there are some girls at our club who play with the boys, as they can do until they are 12.

"After that, we are losing them, they either move to Bridgnorth or go further afield or just stop playing rugby altogether, which is a shame.

"We need to start a girls section off, which is three age groups altogether from under-13 to under-15, who will then be able to play as one side.

"I coach in schools as a self-employed rugby coach and a lot of the girls I meet want to have a go at the sport, so we had some sessions at the club.

"It's building up and we have had two sessions where we have 24 girls, if I can keep a good number of them it would be brilliant and some are good players."
