Liam Davies is the Shropshire Elite hope
Liam Davies carries the remaining hopes of Shropshire into the West Midlands finals of the England Elite Championships this weekend.
The 19-year-old, who competes for his Dad Tristan's Donnington Boxing Club, has enjoyed a bye right through to Sunday's area decider,
But Davies has now been matched with old rival Sam Holt, from Nechells in Birmingham, as they vie for a place in the first national stages at 52kg.
Holt lost unanimously on points to Davies on a Donnington club show earlier this month, so will be looking for revenge with the stakes high.
The Brummie defeated the boxing poet Mat Windle, who was beaten by Davies on another Donnington bill in February, by the same verdict in last weekend's West Midlands semi-finals.
Brothers Aroon and Amir Fiaz both had to pull out of contests in the Elite tournament last weekend after a bug swept through Wellington Boxing Academy.
The siblings had weighed in to walk over the previous weekend to the semi-finals and had been matched for last four clashes.
They were instead laid low by the same chest infection that's affected a number of their members and had to cry off on the Saturday.
The regional round went on without them at the Newdigate Social & Colliery Club in Bedworth, which will again stage the finals on Sunday.
Amir had been due to step through the ropes at 69kg with Kas Mahmood, from Bell Green in Coventry, while Aroon was paired with 75kg rival Zach Parker, of Swadlincote in Derbyshire.
It's disappointing for the Fiaz's in a competition they have both done well in before, reaching the national semi-finals of the old senior ABAs.
