The Telford district's Sports & Social Centre was the venue for the West Midlands opener on Sunday afternoon, writes Craig Birch.

The competition now takes a break while finals weekend in the England Elite tournament takes place at Liverpool's Echo Arena, where Donnington's Liam Davies is involved at 52kg.

The Schoolboys area decider has been set for in Stoke-on-Trent on Sunday May 3, where Donnington can call on a fresh trio who walked over without boxing.

There's work to do for Brayden Davies first, as he must box off a semi-final in the Class A category, for fighters born in 2002, this week.

Davies will take on Terry Quinn, of Richie Carter's Golden Gloves, with the winner to oppose Jagbir Mann, from Amphion in Wednesbury, in the 35.5kg West Midlands final.

Going straight through to an area decider for Donnington in Class A is Carlos Steward in the highest weight class, 72kg.

In the most senior Class B (2001), they also have Bradley Thompson and Harrison Cutler still in the running at 34kg and 56kg respectively.

They lost Amir Abbas and Will Price, though, who were defeated at the weekend after being paired from the off.

Abbas competed in the Class A category, for fighters born in 2002, at 50kg and lasted less than a round with the strong Cole Lee, from Wodensborough in the Black Country.

Lee forced the referee's intervention after clattering Abbas with a barrage of punches after landing a left hook, forcing the referee to act.

Price entered in the 'minors' (2003) at 35.5kg and was nudged out by a split decision on points to Walsall Wood's Billy Chard.

A competitive bout went to the cards where Chard's guile led him through, the same verdict also costing Telford & Wrekin's Arron Wall at 40kg in Class A.

Wall pushed Spencer Hurst, from Pleck in Walsall, close before bowing out on another split.
