She followed it up with a second round of 80 to finish top of the leaderboard with 151 to comfortably qualify for the match play stages which start today.

Gillum, a former winner of the event, will face Mair Robinson in the last 16.

Competition organiser Sheila Parker said: "Katrina shot a fantastic first round, a new ladies' course record.

"It was all-the-more impressive as it was achieved in sometimes wet and windy conditions."

Anne Weetman, of Llanymynech, qualified second, finishing six shots behind Gillum to set up a meeting with Isabel Green.

Shrewsbury's Hilary Fowles was third with 169 and will play Linda Mottram in the last 16.

The rest of the round will see Tania Pearce face Elizabeth Harding, Sue March take on Angela Hinton, Sara Meehan against Victoria Raffle, Anne Belshaw versus Gemma Thornell and Lucy Evans against Ros Curel.

The last eight will follow in the afternoon with the semi-finals and final taking place on Saturday.
