'The Count' battled though his first game against S J Luscombe but prevailed 4-3, then turning on the style to whitewash Darren Owens 4-0.

He then dropped just a leg to see off Michael Baker 4-1, before another last leg contest saw him see off Mike Norton 4-3 to reach the last 16.

That's where he went up against Scott Mitchell, who experienced glory at Lakeside in January, and put out one of his successors for the title.

He did it in style, too, with another 4-1 success which saw him emerge from Group Five to take on Aaron Dyer, who managed to beat him 4-2.

Albrighton's Anthony West also competed in the men's singles event and opened with a 4-1 win over Matt Read, before losing by the same score-line to Baker.
