The Commonwealth Games champion won for Great Britain in the World Cup (Pan American Open) in El Salvador.

Fighting in the under-73kg section, the Shrewsbury star had a bye in round one before beating Idro of Chile in round two and Tavery of Mexico in his group final.

That put him into the semi-finals against Murando of Puerto Rico where his third victory took him through to face – and defeat – Canada's David Ancor in the final.

Williams said: "Four very hard fights, four very hard wins. What an unbelievable day.

"Humongous thanks to all my supporters in Shrewsbury and Camberley. One hundred points closer to Rio 2016 Olympic qualification."

Williams, a former Meole Brace School student, is currently studying at Anglia Ruskin in Cambridge.

He trained with Shrewsbury's Bushido Judokwai from the age of four until his mid-teens. He now trains at Camberley in Surrey.
