'The Count' reached the last four out of more than 1,000 players at the Normandy Cosmopolitan Hotel in Renfrew.

Danny Noppert eventually ended his challenge with a 5-1 reverse, averaging 99.36 on the way, but it still represented progress for Hankey.

The Dutchman then went on to claim the title and the £3,000 winners cheque, whitewashing an overwhelmed Dean Reynolds 6-0 in the final.

Hankey tweeted after the tournament: "Had a great time in Scotland over the weekend! Want to thank @BDODarts and all my amazing fans. #BeOnYourWay."

The 47-year-old, who lives in Aqueduct, came through Group 44 in the men's singles with three whitewashes on the way to the board final.

Ross Paterson, Anthony Dundas and Paul Clark were all accounted for 3-0, before he defeated Kevin Addison to progress from the last 128.

He then shut out Alexander Morrison 4-0 as play was upgraded to the best-of-seven format, before a 4-1 victory over Euan Callander.

Dumping out 2015 world champion Scott Mitchell 4-1 was an impressive result, setting up a quarter-final with this year's Lakeside semi-finalist Jamie Hughes.

An all-West Midlands clash with Hughes, from Tipton in the Black Country, went his way 5-1 as the legs were upped again, but Noppert then turned the tables.
