Shropshire pair on the throttle in Golden Era
Two Shropshire riders dominated their respective classes at the Wirral 100 Club championships.
Jon Wright from Pontesbury, near Shrewsbury, and Bishop's Castle's Barry Furber went toe-to-toe in the 650 Twins and Golden Era supersport classes around the Anglesey Coastal circuit.
Wright, 42, enjoyed the upper hand during the opening race, pipping his Shropshire rival for second place.
Wright won the shortened second race on his 600cc Honda, with Furber third on his Suzuki supertwin.
But Furber gained revenge during race three, claiming the win as Wright came home in second breaking the class lap record as he fought back after gear selection problems.
Furber retired in the final race after a crash with Wright third. Wright rounded off the weekend in the Powerbikes and Golden Era Superbikes on his Suzuki GSXR750.
He finished fifth twice, second and fourth overall in the final wet race, but his skills on the older machinery ensured he finished top of the pile in the Golden Era class.
He said: "I smashed the Golden Era track record on my GSXR 750. Winning the class is always the priority, so having the lap record is the icing on the cake.
"I'm delighted to have top-five finishes in the powerbike class against some of the newest and more powerful 1000 cc bikes. My 16-year-old Suzuki is performing well."
Furber, aged 31, fresh from his first stint at the Isle of Man TT races, also hailed his return to the circuits.
He said: "The first 650cc race was dry and I took the lead on the first lap. After some very close racing with Martyn Bloomfield and Jon Wright, I crossed the finish line in first overall.
"The second 650cc race started well and I took the lead on a very wet track, but soon started swapping places with Richard Charlton.
"Chasing Richard out of the second corner I Iost control and slid off.
"I got the bike back to the paddock and repaired the fairing, fitted new foot pegs and a brake lever, then went out for the last open class race. Again, on a very wet track, I took the overall win."
The Wirral 100 Club will be back in action around Angelsey from July 30-31.
