The 16-year-old saw action at the Newdigate Colliery Club in Bedworth, which will also host the West Midlands deciders.

A single age range - born in either 1999 or 2000 - houses the fighters, who are split into weight classes before being whittled down. Bouts take place over three, three minute rounds.

Hussain, now representing Len Woodhall's Community Club in Madeley, stepped through the ropes with Ryan Dixon, of Exhall in Coventry, at 49kg.

The two jostled for position as the bout went the distance, but it was Hussain who had his hand raised on a points split decision.

He will now go toe-to-toe with Scott Melvin, from Eastside in Birmingham, who progressed without boxing after Burslem Golden Gloves' Ansin Khushal failed to make the weight.

The former Hadley Learning Community pupil has been to the top table before, winning Wellington Boxing Academy's first national title in the 2015 England Junior Championships.

Also still involved in the Youth competition is Ludlow's Terry-Dean Smith, who has walked over the regional rounds with no opponents for him at 81kg.

Donnington's Ryan Tyrer bowed out of the tournament at Newdigate last weekend, with his Brummie opponent making it a double delight.

Tryer was defeated unanimously by Kamrun Sullivan, of O'Dells, at 60kg less than 24 hours after Sullivan beat Ellis Truman, from the Second City, through the same verdict in a box-off.

Southpaw Tyrer had previously prevailed from an all-Shropshire battle with Len Woodhall's Kieron Solon unanimously, levelling the wins in combat between the two.
