Newport found themselves on the wrong end of a 48-27 scoreline with an entertaining Scunthorpe in National League Three Midlands.
The Forton Road hosts elected to play up the slope and into a stiff breeze and were determined not to be sucked into a loose, open game favoured by the visitors – who had run in 66 points against Malvern a week earlier.
But their plans were in tatters as Scunthorpe started emphatically, registering two converted tries in the first nine minutes.
Chris Perry was able to reduce the arrears with a penalty after Newport's first sortie into the visitors half.
He went on to convert a Paul Buttery try and kick a long-range penalty as the deficit was reduced to four points, only for Scunthorpe to add another try before the break – and then a fourth soon after the re-start.
Newport skipper Neil Weston and Buttry went over for two more scores for the hosts as the gap was briefly reduced to just two points.
A tense finish was on the cards then, but Scunthorpe showed their class with three more tries to seal their success.
