Shropshire student Sam Egerton selected by Oxford for Varsity match at Twickenham
Shropshire student Sam Egerton will follow in the footsteps of some rugby legends for the second straight year on Thursday when he runs out at Twickenham to represent Oxford in the famous Varsity match with Cambridge.
Scrum-half Egerton, who plays his club rugby for Newport, has been named in the squad for the 131st annual match between the two universities.
Egerton, who is one of nine returning Blues in the squad, was involved last year as Oxford won for the second straight time.
And the 20-year old will again be involved again this year, albeit in the slightly less familiar position of full-back.
Former participants in the match have included England greats Rob Andrew, Phil de Glanville and Stuart Barnes as well as ex-Scotland captain Gavin Hastings.
Egerton, a former Adams Grammar School pupil who is now in his second year at Keble College studying law, said: "It is the pinnacle of the season for anyone involved with the club and it is the only game that matters.
"You build towards it game by game trying to cement your place in the team. There is a lot of pressure riding on the game. It is a big event in the university calendar but it was a great experience last year and I will try to make sure I enjoy again this year."
Newport head coach Steve Dolphin added: "It is fantastic for Newport to see a player come through the youth system and go on to represent one of the most prestigious universities in the world in their biggest match of the season."
