Connor Adams and Ricky Bailey, who both attend Burton Borough School in Newport, will compete for the chance to represent their country at a tournament being held in January.

The two boys, who both have aspirations to make it as professionals, will go up against 80 other youngsters for a slot in the team. Places will also be up for grabs for an England North and England South development squad.

Burton Borough School PE teacher Simon Bell said: "They both normally play rugby league. Connor is with Wigan and Ricky is with St Helens but this England trial is for rugby union.

"They have now been chosen for the Midlands Rugby Union squad which gives them automatic access to an England trial. It's a fantastic achievement."

Both players are hoping to win an under-19s contract with their respective clubs over the summer.

Ricky, 15, described the England trial as a big opportunity.

He said: "I'm delighted to have been chosen. It's such a big opportunity and one I've been working really hard to get.

"We will both go off to a training camp in January. We'll train and play a few games where we will be watched by the England scouts. I can't wait to get going."

Connor added: "We've played for the county together and now we have been chosen for this training camp.

"I'm really pleased. I always hoped I'd get chosen but it was great when it was finally confirmed."
