New Church Stretton rugby club up and running

Church Stretton have become Shropshire's newest rugby club.

The recently-formed outfit will play their first-ever match at home against Shropshire rivals Bishop's Castle on August 20 (7pm).

Church Stretton currently have 40 players training regularly ahead of a programme of friendly matches which have been arranged for the forthcoming season.

Martyn Longhurst, a local school teacher who has coached North Midlands youth teams, has been appointed director of rugby, with Ben Speake elected as captain.

Church Stretton will play their home matches at Church Stretton School's ground at Shrewsbury Road.

The club, which is training tonight (7pm), is looking for new players. Details are available from Barrie Oxtoby on 01694 723199.
