First female president for Shropshire RFU

Judith Phelps has been elected the first female president in the history of the Shropshire RFU.

The Telford Hornets club stalwart succeeded Andrew Watson-Jones of Newport at the county's annual meeting last night.

She will hold office for a two-year term. Don Howell of Oswestry as elected as Shropshire's Vice-President.

Phelps began her association with rugby at Telford while her children were moving through the club's junior section.

She went on to serve the club in a number of roles including chairman and is also safeguarding manager of North Midlands RFU.

She is responsible, on a voluntary basis, for setting, managing and advising on safeguarding policy across a Constituent Body of more than 60 clubs.

Phelps has also been called on to present and support at RFU events and conferences, an acknowledgement of her expertise and the respect in which she is held.

Last year she was a Torch Trophy winner, a national award which recognises volunteers in sport and recreation.
