Hockey ace Maddie Hinch: MBE ceremony more nerve-racking than Rio shoot-out
She said it was “no joke, I was definitely less nervous” than facing Olympic penalties.
Getting her MBE medal was “100 per cent” more nerve-racking than facing a penalty shoot-out in the Olympic final, according to British hockey hero Maddie Hinch.
The 28-year-old goalkeeper saved four penalties as Britain beat reigning champions the Netherlands in a dramatic shoot-out to win Olympic gold in Rio 2016.
After the MBE ceremony, she said it was “no joke, I was definitely less nervous” than facing Olympic penalties.
She added: “I was less nervous lining up in the tunnel for the Olympic final than I was just then which is really funny.
“It just tops off what has been an incredible year for us.”
She picked up her insignia alongside team-mates who were also honoured by being made MBEs including Oldham-born Nicola White, 29, Southampton’s Alex Danson, 31, and Sophie Bray, 27, of Claygate, Surrey.
Ms Hinch, originally from West Sussex, was still beaming from being named world Female Goalkeeper of the Year a few days ago.
