Gary Caldwell has been sacked by Chesterfield following their 2-1 defeat to Accrington.

Chesterfield, who were relegated from Sky Bet League One last term, sit 23rd in the League Two table after taking just five points from their opening eight league games.

And after watching the 10-man Spireites lose their fifth league game of the season on Saturday, Caldwell was relieved of his duties.

Chesterfield director and company secretary Ashley Carson told the club’s official website: “Gary has worked very hard during his time at the club, but we find ourselves in a lowly position after providing him with substantial backing in the transfer market.

“After making a very poor start to the season, we feel that now is the time to appoint a new manager to bring about a change in fortunes.”
