The Wolverhampton cycle star begins today's Bristol stage in 91st position after two rides – including yesterday's dramatic ride through Devon, where he sustained nasty facial injuries.

Tennant, 33, lost ground overall with a 99th placed finish from a completed field of 116 – almost 12 minutes off stage winner Cameron Meyer – in the Cranbrook to Barnstaple leg after a nasty shunt.

The 2016 team pursuit Track World Cup gold medallist posted a blooded image of his cut face on Twitter following the completion of the second stage, where he added: "Not the @tourofbritain stage 2 I hoped for."

The fall cost Tennant, who lives in Shifnal, ground after his stage one effort of 62nd in south Wales on day one.

But he is hoping for more luck in today's 128km Bristol ride – a sharp leg into the north Somerset hills, including the popular climb of Cheddar Gorge. He is ranked 27th Brit going into stage three.

The tour, which consists of daily stages, has eight rides in total and finishes in London on September 9.

Former Team Wiggins man Tennant, who now rides for British team Canyon Eisberg, joked on the social media site that the injuries were a result of a new addition to his family.

He posted: "I told @LATennant15 (Lauren Tennant) getting a kitten was a bad idea!"
