Ludlow Cadet has won a top award
An Army Cadet Force volunteer has been honoured with the 'best student' award from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
Sandhurst is known as the British Army’s national centre of excellence for leadership.
For 2nd Lieutenant Peter Gilbertson, joining the ACF was a decision made late on in life after his two sons had already experienced cadet life and are now looking forward to a career in the Parachute Regiment.
Since becoming commissioned, Peter has now been appointed as the Detachment Commander at Ludlow Detachment – his son’s original detachment.
He said: “I really enjoyed the camaraderie in the Sergeants Mess. However being commissioned gives me the aspiration to eventually take on a County role such as Duke of Edinburgh Award Expeditions Officer”.
With no previous military experience, Peter’s natural leadership skills, which he had gained from his civilian role as a project manager, were identified at an early stage during his training as a volunteer instructor.
Shropshire ACF Commandant, Colonel Gary Newbrook said: “I am delighted with the outcomes of Peter’s progress through the Initial Officer Training package and achieving the Best Student award is a great accomplishment.
"In recent years Shropshire ACF has excelled in guiding candidates through the ACF Commissioning process and is always looking for the next commissionable candidate."
