A controversial piece of public art has been unveiled in a Shropshire town with an organiser of Darwin celebrations praising it.

The Quantum Leap sculpture and Darwin Memorial Garden in Shrewsbury was seen for the first time yesterday after scaffolding was taken down.

But the sculpture, which has come under intense criticism, has been branded "surprisingly elegant" by John King, the Darwin co-ordinator for the town.

He said: "I am delighted with the Quantum Leap sculpture and despite it being made of stone and metal find it surprisingly elegant."
