The Big Tree Giveaway is part of the council’s wider campaign to help tackle climate change.

After declaring a climate emergency in 2018, the council committed to become carbon neutral by 2030 and to help others make a difference too. Since its first Big Tree Giveaway in 2021, more than 14,000 trees have been planted in Oswestry. The aim is to plant 17,000 – one for each resident.

The Mayor of Oswestry Cllr Mike Isherwood said: “Trees are one of the best natural defences against climate change. They clean the air we breathe, lock up carbon, provide homes for wildlife and are beautiful to look at. Help us help the planet and pick up your free tree.”

Trees will be available to pick up during National Tree Week from Bailey Head on Saturday, 23 November and Wednesday, 27 November between 10am and 2pm. Before choosing a tree, residents are urged to think about what would best suit their garden. Native varieties on offer include cherry, crab apple, field maple, hazel and rowan.

Trees will be given on a first come, first served basis, and one per household. Arrive in good time to avoid disappointment.
