They will be doubling up celebrations on the day, as the church also remembers St Lucia’s Day on December 13 – the patron saint after whom the school and the village Church are both named.

The school was first moved from its original location in the village, to a purpose-built facility in 1858, which can still be seen in Upton Magna today. 116 years later, the children and teachers were relocated to what is now St Lucia’s CofE Primary School, where the school has continued to form an integral part of the wider community.

As part of the school’s planned celebrations, past pupils and their families from over 170 years of schooling, are encouraged to share their stories and memories with the pupils there today, by contacting the school Admin team. The school plans to open up it’s own archives of some of the wonderful historical photographs it has collected over the years in the hopes to recognise and reach out to some of these families in the shared history of this beloved village school.

As the headteacher, Catherine Coleman explains: “With our focus on supporting every child to thrive, we are always keen to develop wider learning opportunities for our children through experiences with our local community and beyond. What better way to make the children more aware of their surroundings and to take pride in the history of their own community, than by sharing the stories of those who came before them!”

The village church is closely affiliated with the school who genuinely has at its heart their Christian vision of “Nurture, Nourish, Grow” for the children of their nursery and primary school. Together, they will be hosting a range of festivities in the coming weeks for their shared community to enjoy.

Should anyone wish to know more about these celebrations at St Lucia’s CofE Primary & Nursery, or share their memories of attending school here, please do make contact with the school via email: admin@st-lucias.shropshire.sch.uk
